U.S. Research and Development: By Science Field

Philanthropic support is needed across all areas of science and technology and can have an outsized impact in fields that receive less funding from other sources. For over a decade, the National Science Foundation has collected data from universities on their annual Research & Development (R&D) expenditures by field and funding source. We use these data to illustrate how funding is distributed across different scientific fields and how the funding levels and sources for each field have changed over the last decade.
